Headaches & Migraines

Headaches have many causes, and some deserve medical evaluation first. When the neck, jaw, upper back or surrounding tissues are involved, physical therapy can be a meaningful part of care.

Clinically reviewed by Anat Burda, DPT, IMT-C

What patients commonly describe

  • Headaches that start at the neck or base of the skull
  • Headaches linked to posture, desk work or sleep position
  • Headaches alongside jaw clenching or TMJ symptoms
  • Recurring headaches following a fall, concussion or car accident
  • Migraine patterns with notable neck or shoulder tension

How Anat evaluates it

Anat looks at the cervical spine, cranial base, jaw, upper back, rib cage and breathing mechanics to understand which physical factors may be contributing to your headache pattern.

What treatment can involve

  • Hands-on treatment for the neck, cranial base and upper back
  • Integrative Manual Therapy and strain-counterstrain
  • Postural, movement and ergonomic strategies
  • A home program tailored to what you can realistically do

Every plan is individualized. Visits are 60 minutes, one-on-one with Anat. Learn more about her approach and Integrative Manual Therapy.

Common questions

Will physical therapy stop my migraines?

Physical therapy does not treat migraine as a neurological condition, but it can address neck, jaw and musculoskeletal factors that may be contributing to your symptoms. Results vary from person to person.
